National Heifer Sale Health Letter

REQUIRED HEALTH TESTING FOR NATIONAL HEIFER SALE

As sale time approaches, we hope all is progressing well for your consignment to the 2023 National Heifer Sale.  This year will be a virtual sale that is broadcast on Cowbuyer.com.

Health tests will need to be conducted slightly different than other national sales. Below is the pertinent information concerning health testing and videography for all consignments. Please read carefully, as there are different dates and requirements.

   WE REQUEST/REQUIRE THAT ALL ANIMALS BE TESTED FOR THE FOLLOWING AFTER JUNE 3rd BUT BEFORE JUNE 20^th SO YOU CAN HAVE YOUR HEALTH RESULTS READY BY JUNE 23rd FOR INCLUSION IN THIS YEAR’S SALE. PLEASE PLAN WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN AS SOME OF THESE TESTS CAN TAKE UP TO 10 DAYS TO BE COMPLETED

ALSO, FIELDSTAFF ARE AVAILABLE TO GET VIDEOS/PICTURES OF YOUR CONSIGNMENT(S) AND THESE SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO TRACIE HOYING (THOYING@USJERSEY.COM) BY JUNE 15^TH FOR EDITTING AND CREATION OFA PLAYLIST. VIDEOS DO NOT NEED TO BE LONG, AS ONLY ABOUT 20-30 SECONDS WILL BE USED. STILL PHOTOS ARE ALSO USABLE.  HEIFERS SHOULD BE CLEAN AND PRESENTED AS NATURAL AS POSSIBLE. ANY VIDEO NOT MEETING THESE STANDARDS, MAY BE ASKED TO BE REDONE. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR AREA REP OR GREG LAVAN.

 We will require an emailed or faxed copy of your health results by June 23, 2023. Please send to Greg Lavan at glavan@usjersey.com or 614-322-4498, Attn: Greg Lavan.  This letter will also be posted on our website at http://jms.usjersey.com for your convenience.

1. TUBERCULOSIS:  Each animal must have a negative Tuberculosis test conducted within 30 days of the sale.  This is a requirement even if you are a Certified Free Herd or from a Certified Free State.
2. BOVINE LEUKOSIS:  Each animal over 8 months must be tested and have a negative Bovine Leukosis test within 150 days of the sale.  (e.g., Elisa or AGID).  If your animal receives a positive test result you have the choice of pulling her from the sale without repercussions or you can leave her in the sale, but it must be posted and announced from the box.
3. BVD-PI:  Each animal must have proof of a negative Antigen Detection test (e.g., ear notch, nucleic acid hybridization, polymerase chain reaction amplification (PCR), viral isolation or Elisa).  This test can take one week.  Proper documentation of a negative test is required.  A documented negative test at any age is acceptable.
4. SHIPPING FEVER VACCINATION:  All animals must have proof of (listed on the health chart) a Shipping Fever Vaccination (an intranasal is recommended) no less than 10 days prior to the sale and not more than 60 days prior to the sale.

5. BRUCELLOSIS:  BAPA or FPA testing is recommended. JMS HIGHLY RECOMMENDS THAT ALL HEIFERS WITHIN THE PROPER AGE RANGE FOR THEIR STATE BE CALFHOOD VACCINATED FOR BRUCELLOSIS.  This will increase her marketability exponentially as several states can ONLY buy calfhood vaccinated cattle. Official calfhood vaccinates under 6 months of age as of sale day, need not be tested. 

HEALTH CERTIFICATE:  Consignors should wait to have this official paperwork completed until after notification on when the heifer will be picked up by the truck for movement to her new owner, because this paper is only valid for 30 days.

5. Please put animal’s tattoo or the herd management number from tamperproof American ID tag on health certificate, in addition to her USDA Official ID. (840 or metal tags)  

BRAND INSPECTION:  Be sure that your animal has been brand inspected if required by your state – at the time of movement only.

CATALOGS:  All consignors will receive a printed catalog.  Catalogs can be downloaded at http://jms.usjersey.com.

PICTURE AND VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS FOR NHS CONSIGNMENTS

Video Standards: We request that you have your animal fitted to National Heifer Sale standards, clean and clipped. Please film in a clean, dry, well-lit area. We recommend filming your consignment NOT on the halter as many heifers look better walking naturally.

Video Quality: A video camera is recommended for filming your heifer, although smart phone videos have proven to be okay in quality. Please remember to hold your smart phone sideways when filming.  Please try to record some of each side of the heifer as she is walking, and depending on her stage of development, a rear udder focus would be advantageous. Please film more than enough footage, and do not worry about the sound or editing. That will be handled in the office. A still photo of your consignment, a candid while doing the video or a picture taken by a professional photographer, will also work very well.

RAW VIDEO IS REQUIRED. Please do not send already produced video. Provide the raw video footage so that all the consignments can have the same format of video presented. NO “YOU TUBE” or similar links will be accepted.

Please have your video and/or still pictures to Tracie Hoying or your area representative by June 15, 2023 (or earlier). This allows time for editing and re-filming if needed. Please call Tracie with any questions or for video advice at 614-322-4471. Most emails cannot handle videos due to the file size. You can send your videos to Tracie by sharing a Google Drive folder or through Dropbox (Google Drive is preferred).
